First Round Review

In 2011, First Round Capital began an in-house publication to provide advice to their portfolio companies. By the time we met in 2014, The Review had become the premier destination for thoughtful commentary for the venture capital and technology startup community. However, the original design hadn’t adapted to the deeper content that was being produced, and the experience on mobile needed improvement.

Overview

Working closely with The Review’s editorial team, we set out to design an experience for their audience that better reflected the high-quality original content that was being produced. Emphasis was placed on complimenting sharp photography with a bold color palette, improving readability through thoughtful typography, and weaving social and data analysis into the overall experience.

Personalized Recommendations

FRR had amassed a wide variety of content over the years, which made surfacing relevant content difficult. To solve for this, we integrated personalized recommendations that learned from a visitor's on-site behavior and surfaced content they'd most likely want to read next.

Magazines

To help readers find relevant content, First Round's editorial team uses the packaging feature built into Proof to create magazines that group stories by subject matter.

Mobile Friendly

Thanks to subtle, smooth transitions the website feels like a native mobile app.

Search

Proof's super-fast search API makes finding the right article almost instanenous.

Adaptive Home Page

To keep the home page fresh, we developed a method that randomizes the design by mixing in full-bleed callouts with a variety of layouts for groups of stories.
